Research Question: How will climate change increase the Dalit population's vulnerability to caste-based discrimination in Nuwakot Colony, Nepal.
Professor:
Dr. Marcie Washington
Inspiration:
After traveling to Nepal to assit in disaster relief efforts I was overwhelmed by the discrimination the Dalits in Nuwakot Colony faced. After completing my volunteer project, I went out and began to collect information from local NGOs and influential community leaders. After collecting information, I went on to select various forms of data to complete my research.
The Four components to my research
First Component:
The influence that Climate change has: Now, the process of climate change – and the multiple natural disasters it will engender –influences the scale and complexity of human mobility, displacement, and humanitarian problems
Second component: Focusing on the Dalit Population in Nuwakot Colony, I chose this population because I spent over a month working in Disaster Relief in Nuwakot and this research is very personal due to my personal connections with Dalit families and region itself.
Third Component:
How climate change increases Dalit vulnerability to illiteracy. My strategy will be targeting the current Nepali education system and how to improve the access to education for the Dalit population, especially in times where Climate change is worsening and force displacement is on the table
Forth component:
How climate change influences Dalit vulnerability to caste-based discrimination. My research revealed that forced displacement caused by climate change worsens the current caste-based discrimination situation. My strategy will be focusing on different ways to improve and prevent the ongoing caste-based discrimination situation
